Symbols

Across centuries, the circle has risen as sun disk, halo, wheel, calendar and mandala. The line is shared; each culture has filled its luminous interior with a meaning of its own.

The lens glimmers through many eras. In Christian art, the vertical mandorla could cradle Christ or the Virgin in divine radiance; kindred forms appear in architecture, seals and ornament.

Seven-circle rosettes and their relatives bloom through ornament in different regions and eras. The name “Seed of Life,” with its familiar spiritual language, belongs mainly to modern sacred-geometry culture.

Interlocking rosettes appear in art and architecture across cultures. The title “Flower of Life” and its familiar nineteen-circle arrangement are chiefly modern conventions woven around an older human love of compass-born pattern.

Metatron appears as an exalted angelic figure in strands of Jewish mystical and apocalyptic literature. The diagram now called Metatron’s Cube belongs to modern esoteric art; surviving ancient texts do not present this exact figure.

The Hebrew word merkavah means “chariot” and names the divine throne-chariot of Ezekiel’s vision and later Jewish mystical traditions. Those historic writings carry their own sacred world rather than instructions for this star-tetrahedron.

The Sri Yantra belongs to Hindu Tantric tradition, especially Sri Vidya, and remains a living presence in worship and contemplation. Its beauty carries devotion, philosophy and ritual far beyond decoration.

Euclid described division in “extreme and mean ratio” around 300 BCE. The name “golden section” arrived much later, and the symbol φ entered the story in the twentieth century.

In Plato’s Timaeus, four solids are joined with fire, earth, air and water; the dodecahedron is placed beside the cosmos as a whole. The shapes were known earlier, yet Plato gave them an enduring philosophical sky.

In specific Mesopotamian worlds, the eight-pointed star belonged to Ishtar or Inanna and appeared beside emblems of sun and moon.

As the Magen David, the Star of David is a central and living symbol of Jewish identity, gathered through history into belonging, memory and faith.

Labyrinth imagery reaches into antiquity and moves through the Greek story of Theseus and the Minotaur. Centuries later, church pavements such as Chartres carried the winding path into Christian pilgrimage.
